Construction Worth USD 1.53 Billion is Set to Begin on the Diriyah Arena Mega Block

In July 2025, Diriyah Company signed a USD 1.53 billion contract with China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd to build the Diriyah Arena superblock. The deal covers a massive indoor arena, mixed-use office buildings, and a large-scale parking facility. But more than that, this is about shaping a space where people can gather, experience live events, and feel the energy of a city that honors both tradition and ambition.

Inside the Diriyah Arena Superblock

At the heart of this development is the Diriyah Arena, designed by global architecture firm HKS Inc. It will hold 20,000 seats and stretch across 74,000 square meters. Inspired by the natural terrain and cultural roots of Diriyah, the arena’s architecture mixes stone forms with creative digital displays, including animated panels that mimic waterfalls and feature immersive digital art.

The arena is made to adapt. It can quickly shift between concerts, sporting events, esports competitions, and exhibitions. Every seat is built to give a clear view and great acoustics, no matter what’s on.

Surrounding the arena are three office buildings, commercial spaces, and more than 4,000 parking spots. Designed by John McAslan + Partners, the office structures add another 114,000 square meters to the block. Whether people are working nearby, meeting for dinner, or heading to an event, the layout makes moving between spaces feel easy.

Part of a Bigger Story

Diriyah holds a special place in Saudi Arabia’s history. It’s the birthplace of the Saudi state and home to the At-Turaif District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The new arena and its surroundings are being built with the same spirit. They’ll join cultural landmarks like the Royal Diriyah Opera House, nine museums, and academic spaces designed in the local Najdi style.

The arena fits into a much larger vision. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 aims to diversify the economy, create jobs, and bring new energy to tourism, culture, and sport. Diriyah’s full development is expected to host 50 million visitors each year, contribute over USD 18 billion to the GDP, and house 100,000 residents.

Who’s Building It and How

China Harbour Engineering Company, already familiar with the site from earlier excavation work in 2024, is taking the lead on construction. The build will move forward in phases. Diriyah Gate One is set to finish in 2025, and the city’s wider infrastructure, including metro stations and 60,000 underground parking spots, is on track for 2027.

Walkable paths, connected districts, and new transport options are being integrated into the design, helping people move through Diriyah with ease and enjoy the growing number of experiences it offers.

Building for Today and Tomorrow

Saudi Arabia has been making big moves in sports and entertainment. Since 2021, it’s hosted more than 50 major international events and invested billions into the sector. The Diriyah Arena adds a flexible venue to that list. It’s built to welcome a mix of events, crowds, and cultures.

At night, the digital displays will light up the plaza. Inside, the arena will shift and shape itself depending on what’s happening. It’s a place designed to stay active, always ready for something new.

Designed with Sustainability and Purpose

Every part of the Diriyah development aims to last. Sustainability plays a major role, from reusing construction materials to planting millions of native trees and plants that cool the area naturally. The thick mud-brick inspired walls help keep temperatures steady. Streets are made for walking. Parking is mostly underground. And public spaces are designed to breathe.

Circular economy practices guide construction. Waste becomes resource. Local knowledge informs design. The project draws from global sustainability guidelines while staying rooted in place.

What’s Coming Next

As construction continues, the pieces of Diriyah’s future are coming together. The Arena will become a place where stories are told through music, games, and shows. The offices will buzz with daily life. Cafes will fill with conversation. The architecture will carry echoes of the past while inviting people into what’s next.

Diriyah is ready to welcome a new kind of visitor, one who comes for both culture and connection. This is where heritage meets possibility. And it’s only just beginning.
